The ADB-Japan Scholarship Program (JSP) provides around 135 fully funded graduate scholarships each year for studies in economics, business and management, science and technology, and other development-related fields at designated academic institutions in the Asia-Pacific region.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must:

  • Be a national of an ADB borrowing member country eligible for Japanese ODA scholarships.
  • Not hold dual citizenship of any developed country.
  • Have admission to a designated master’s program.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree with a strong academic record.
  • Have at least 2 years of full-time professional experience (post-degree).
  • Be proficient in English.
  • Be under 35 years old (some exceptions possible).
  • Be in good health.
  • Agree to return to your home country and work there for at least 2 years after completing your studies.
  • Not be staff or close relatives of ADB personnel.
  • Not be living or working in a country other than your home country.
  • Not be already enrolled in graduate degree programs

What the Scholarship Covers:

  • Full tuition fees
  • Monthly subsistence and housing allowance
  • Allowance for books and instructional materials
  • Medical insurance
  • Travel expenses
     

The scholarship is for one (1) year with an extension to the second year of study, as appropriate, which shall be conditional on the scholar maintaining a satisfactory level of performance as determined by the institute.

The maximum duration of the scholarship award is two (2) years for master's program.

How to Apply:

  1. Request information and application forms from your chosen partner institution.
  2. Apply for admission to the program and indicate your interest in the JSP.
  3. Submit required documents to the institution, including:
    • ADB-JSP Information Sheet
    • Academic transcripts
    • Income/family income certification
  4. The academic institution screens and ranks applicants and submits recommendations to ADB.
  5. ADB forwards the final list to the Executive Director of Japan for approval.
  6. Successful candidates are notified, and scholarship acceptance is arranged.

Important Notes:

  • Applications must be submitted at least 6 months before your intended start date.
  • The scholarship does not cover family expenses, extra-curricular courses, or additional travel.
  • No separate application to ADB is required—applications go directly through the academic institution.
