The Bonn International Fellowship program offers internationally renowned postdoctoral researchers and experienced faculty the opportunity to engage in short-term scholarly visits, lasting up to 12 days, at the University of Bonn in Germany. Designed to strengthen academic collaboration, the fellowship includes participation in seminars, lectures, and public outreach activities. Fully funded by the university, the program covers travel expenses, a daily stipend, and event-related costs. It is ideal for postdocs or senior academics with strong international experience and established connections with hosts at the University of Bonn.

Eligibility

  • Open to post-doctoral scholars and experienced faculty actively teaching or researching at international universities or research institutes at the University of Bonn - external self-nominations are not permitted.
  • Researchers need to be invited by a host from the University of Bonn. Applications can only be submitted by members of the University.
  • Open internationally - no nationality restrictions

Program Dates

  • Application deadline: September 22, 2025 (5 PM CET)
  • Duration: Between January 1 and December 31, 2026, with all funding to be used by December 31, 2026 

Program Coverage & Benefits

  • Travel allowance tiered by country of departure
  • Daily stipend of €160 per day (up to 12 days; includes arrival & departure days)
  • Event/material expenses up to €500 per visit for seminars or outreach
  • Accommodation & health insurance  (not directly covered; fellows must secure these independently)

Required Documents

  • Application (to be submitted by your Bonn host): online form
  • Project Description: PDF (max 6 pages) plus fellow’s consent
  • Fellow’s CV: 2-page max PDF
  • Invitation Letter: signed by the Bonn host
  • Financing Plan: Excel template provided by Bonn
  • Poof of language proficiency in German/English is optional, but may help

Application Process

  1. Find a host at the University of Bonn (preferably in your field) willing to invite you
  2. Researchers functioning as hosts at the University of Bonn who have completed a doctorate submit the application. The fellow declares their agreement to the nomination in an informal letter.
  3. You must provide the required documents and a letter of consent
  4. Submit by September 22, 2025 (5 PM CET)
  5. Selection is based on your track record, proposed engagement at Bonn, and plans for ongoing collaboration
