China has announced the launch of a new visa category, the K visa, aimed at attracting young science and technology talent from around the world. The policy, part of the country’s revised entry-exit regulations under State Council Order No. 814, will take effect on October 1, 2025.
The K visa is designed specifically for individuals at the early stages of their careers in STEM fields. Eligible applicants include:
Unlike China’s traditional work visas, the K visa does not require applicants to have a pre-arranged employer or host institution, offering greater flexibility for graduates, independent researchers, and entrepreneurs exploring opportunities in China.
Detailed application procedures, required documents, and potential online submission processes are expected to be released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ahead of the October 1 rollout. Local governments may also introduce pilot programs to complement the visa, offering incentives such as housing support or startup grants.
The move comes amid Beijing’s push to achieve self-reliance in high-tech fields and to rival the US in innovation. By 2035, China aims to be a global leader in science and technology, a goal it is pursuing through research funding, targeted recruitment drives, and enhanced academic incentives.
Therefore, the K visa is a strategic tool in China’s global competition for scientific and technological leadership. If implemented effectively, it could position China as a leading destination for the next generation of innovators, researchers, and entrepreneurs.
