Using topographical data from NASA's Mars Global Surveyor, the researchers found contours of what once could be an ocean on Mars. This phenomenon could bring an end to a debate of whether Mars had a long-living ocean.

Scientists have compared the phenomenon to a large bathtub ring. On Mars, a coastal shelf would have developed over millions of years as a result of rivers dropping mud and sand into the ocean, waves dispersing those sediments, and gradual changes in sea level. From above, the sedimentary rock that makes up this shelf may appear to mimic the ring left over after a bathtub has been emptied.

This finding also suggests that Mars had a more habitable environment which allowed water to exist.
