In a half-hour video posted on X on June 8, Musk outlined SpaceX’s vision for a network of AI satellites equipped with large numbers of solar panels, cooling radiators and high-speed optical laser links, Space reports. The company also plans to launch a dedicated production facility for AI-focused satellites by the end of next year. The facility is expected to become a major hub for the development and manufacturing of satellite-based AI technology.

Supporters of orbital data centers argue that space could offer a solution to the growing demands of artificial intelligence, as Earth-based data centers face increasing limitations related to land availability, power consumption and water usage. While space-based data centers remain largely theoretical and have not yet been demonstrated on a commercial scale, Musk said SpaceX is confident it can develop the technology needed to make an AI data center constellation a reality.

He noted that many of the required technologies are already being developed for the next generation of Starlink satellites. According to Musk, the upcoming Starlink V3 satellites possess much of the infrastructure needed to support future AI computing systems in orbit. Musk also described a network of computing units installed on satellites that would communicate with each other and with Starlink satellites through laser links. Data could then be transmitted to Earth using antennas or optical communications with minimal latency, enabling high-speed data transfer between space and the ground. The announcement reflects SpaceX’s broader ambitions to expand beyond satellite internet services and play a major role in the future development of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
