The European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO) is offering a fully funded Science Communication Internship in Garching, Germany. This immersive program provides hands-on experience in science journalism and communication within one of the world’s leading astronomical research institutions. Interns will contribute to ESO’s Department of Communication, engaging in tasks such as writing news articles, press releases, video scripts, and exhibition materials. The internship spans 3 to 6 months, with applications reviewed every 4–6 months on a rolling basis. Applicants should indicate their preferred start date when applying. 

Eligibility

  • Open to international applicants.
  • Preferably pursuing or recently graduated with a degree in science, science communication, or science journalism.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Have a knowledge of astronomy that allows you to understand scientific papers.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate science to a broader audience.
  • Have strong MS Office applications skills (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Experience in science communication or journalism is advantageous.

Program Dates/Location

  • Application Deadline: applications are accepted on a rolling basis; however, they are reviewed every 4–6 months throughout the year
  • Duration: 3 to 6 months.
  • Start Dates: Flexible; applicants should specify their preferred start
  • Location: Garching, Germany (on-site; remote or hybrid options are not available).
