Alan Milburn, who is leading a government-commissioned review into youth employment, said the current model prioritizes academic sorting over real-world readiness. He warned that while schools are effective at measuring academic ability, they are falling short in developing essential workplace skills.

New polling by YouGov, involving more than 1,000 teachers across the UK, found that 74% believe exams are overemphasized. Meanwhile, 73% said there is insufficient focus on preparing students for employment or building soft skills.

The findings also revealed widespread support for reform. Nearly all teachers surveyed backed improved career guidance, while large majorities supported vocational pathways and alternative learning routes.

Milburn emphasized that academic achievement and employability should not be treated as competing goals, calling for an education system that better prepares students for the demands of modern working life.
