The Getty Foundation Fellowships 2026–27, part of the Getty Scholars Program, invite emerging and established researchers in art history and visual culture to engage in impactful, theme-based scholarly work. These fellowships offer nine-month fully funded residencies at either the Getty Center or Getty Villa in Los Angeles, focusing on this year’s theme of “Provenance”, examining art objects’ ownership, movement, and ethical histories. 

Eligibility

  • Open to international scholars in the arts, humanities, or social sciences.
  • Predoctoral Fellows
    • Must have advanced to candidacy in their PhD program by the Oct 1, 2025 deadline and expect to complete their dissertation during the fellowship.
  • Postdoctoral Fellows
    • Those who earned their PhD within the past five years (after September 1, 2021) are eligible.
  • Scholar Grants
    • For those who earned their PhD more than five years ago (before September 1, 2021)
  • Previous Getty residential grant recipients must wait six years before reapplying
  • Not eligible for current Getty staff or immediate family members

Program Dates/Location

  • Special AAAHI grants for African American art research
