Hangzhou Introduces Mandatory AI Education in Schools

Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province in eastern China, is set to implement mandatory artificial intelligence (AI) courses for all primary and secondary school students starting this semester. This initiative aligns with China's broader strategy to integrate AI into education and cultivate a tech-savvy workforce (Global Times, South China Morning Post).

The city's education bureau has outlined a comprehensive curriculum that spans all grade levels. In the early years (grades 1–2), students will be introduced to everyday AI applications, engaging with basic devices and understanding the role of technology in daily life. As they progress, the curriculum will delve deeper, covering decision trees, neural networks, and the ethical implications of AI (Global Times, South China Morning Post).

Each student is required to complete at least 10 hours of AI instruction annually. Schools have the flexibility to deliver these lessons intensively over a week or integrate them into subjects such as information technology and science. Additionally, AI-themed projects and after-school programs will provide hands-on learning opportunities (South China Morning Post, Barlaman Today).

This move positions Hangzhou at the forefront of China's AI education efforts, complementing its reputation as a hub for tech startups like DeepSeek and Unitree Robotics. (South China Morning Post, Barlaman Today).
