ICESCO’s First Regional Conference on “Green Education” Kicks Off in Baku

The first regional conference on “Green Education”, jointly organized by the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), has officially commenced today in Baku.

The two-day event brings together representatives from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan to discuss how to transform education systems for a sustainable and climate-resilient future.

The discussions focus on the Green Education Framework, developed by ICESCO and the University of Cambridge and launched during COP29 in Baku last year. The Framework is built around four key pillars — curriculum, teachers, communities, and schools — and includes nine recommendations designed to guide member states in embedding sustainability and climate awareness into education.

The main goal of this regional conference is to build a bridge between the concept and the implementation of the Green Education Framework. As the first in a series of regional events, the Baku conference marks the beginning of a broader initiative to be implemented in other ICESCO regions in the near future.

Speakers at the opening ceremony included Deputy Minister of Science and Education Hasan Hasanli, Deputy Director of ICESCO’s Baku Regional Office Maryam Gafarzade, and Head of ICESCO’s Education Sector Haddy Jatou Sey.

The two-day conference conference will feature panel discussions and working sessions on advancing green education practices and promoting sustainable development through learning.
