Iran targeted a school building in Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan region using an unmanned aerial vehicle, according to a statement from the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Edu-live reports that the Azerbaijani ministry rejected a statement by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran denying involvement in the drone incident, calling the claim unacceptable.

School building in Nakhchivan

According to the ministry, technical monitoring confirmed that four unmanned aerial vehicles belonging to the Iranian armed forces were directed toward Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan region with the intention of carrying out attacks. Azerbaijani forces neutralized one of the drones, while the others targeted civilian infrastructure, including a secondary school building during class hours.

The drone aimed at the school did not reach its intended target and crashed near the building, exploding on the ground. No casualties were reported.

The Ministry of Defence stated that Azerbaijan expects the Iranian side to stop denying the incident, issue an apology, and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
