Most pupils receiving good education, council report finds

According to the, BBC the majority of pupils in Wolverhampton are receiving a good standard of education, according to a new report reviewed by the council. At the end of the summer term 2025, 97% of schools were rated good or outstanding for quality of education by Ofsted.

This marks a 27% increase since 2014 and places Wolverhampton significantly above the national average of 90%.

Out of 110 schools with an Ofsted rating in August 2025, 106 were judged good or outstanding for overall effectiveness or quality of education. During the academic year, four schools improved from requiring improvement to good, while two schools were rated inadequate.

The report supports the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Education Excellence Strategy, which aims to improve educational outcomes and identify areas for development for young learners.

Two primary schools — Bushbury Hill and Graiseley — which required improvement under the previous Ofsted framework in summer 2024, are currently receiving support. Wednesfield Technology Primary School, which opened in September 2024, is scheduled for inspection in the next academic year.

In November last year, a new Ofsted school rating system came into force, replacing the previous one- or two-word judgments. Schools will now receive report cards designed to provide a more detailed description of school performance.

The report also highlights pupil attainment. In Year 1, 77% of pupils met the expected standard in the phonics screening check, slightly below the national figure of 80%. By the end of primary school, 64% of pupils reached the expected standards in reading, writing and mathematics, which is above national averages.

Officials also noted that disadvantaged pupils are performing well compared to their national and regional peers.

Recommendations in the report include introducing new support for secondary school English and mathematics teachers, and continuing projects aimed at improving outcomes for pupils with education, health and care plans and those receiving SEND support.

The report will be reviewed by the council’s Children and Young People Scrutiny Panel on 4 March.
