The NIAS Safe Haven Fellowship 2026 is a fully funded academic opportunity based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Hosted by the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS), it supports international scholars, writers, artists, and journalists who cannot safely continue their work in their home countries due to war, conflict, or political repression. The fellowship provides a secure and supportive environment for free intellectual and creative expression from early 2026.

Eligibility 

  • Applicants: International scholars, writers, artists, and journalists
  • Requirements:
    • Scientific Proposals: Minimum of 3 years of research experience post-PhD
    • Artistic/Journalistic Proposals: No PhD required
    • Project Focus: Must fall within the humanities or social sciences
    • Language Proficiency: Strong command of English
    • Availability: Must be present at NIAS for at least 4 days a week
  • Note: Applicants affiliated with institutions boycotted by the Dutch state are not eligible.
