India — OpenAI has announced the launch of its Learning Accelerator program in India, aiming to integrate advanced AI tools into the country's education system. The initiative, announced in August 2025, seeks to empower both educators and students by enhancing AI literacy and supporting research on AI-driven educational methods.

As part of the program, OpenAI will distribute 500,000 free ChatGPT licenses over the next six months to students and educators across India. These licenses will be offered through partnerships with the Ministry of Education, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and ARISE schools, providing widespread access to AI tools in classrooms and helping foster innovative teaching practices.

In addition, OpenAI has awarded a $500,000 research grant to IIT Madras to study the impact of AI on learning outcomes. This collaboration will explore new teaching methods and examine how AI can enhance educational experiences, with the research findings to be shared publicly for broader benefit.

The Learning Accelerator also includes AI training programs designed to build literacy among educators and students. By offering structured guidance on how to use AI tools effectively and responsibly, these programs aim to encourage critical thinking, personalized learning, and active engagement in the classroom. Features such as ChatGPT’s “study mode” will provide students with personalized tutoring, interactive questioning, and step-by-step explanations to strengthen understanding and retention.

India is emerging as a central focus for OpenAI’s global education strategy, thanks to its vast student population and widespread use of ChatGPT. By teaming up with leading educational institutions and government agencies, OpenAI aims to build a lasting, inclusive AI ecosystem in education. The Learning Accelerator program is set to become a cornerstone in advancing AI-driven learning across the country.
