Parents back 20mph speed limit plans near schools

Residents in Guildford have backed plans to reduce speed limits in a bid to improve road safety around a local school.

According to the BBC, under proposals by Surrey County Council (SCC), the speed limit on Bushy Hill Drive and surrounding roads, including Ashbury Crescent, Boxgrove Lane and Curlew Gardens, could be reduced from 30mph to 20mph.

A public consultation on the plans is currently under way and will remain open until Monday. Residents say traffic levels have increased in recent years, with some drivers exceeding the speed limit.

Local parent Annie Edwards said the rise in traffic poses a risk to children.

“Sometimes children run straight out into the road. Cars speed along the road when they can. I think 20mph is a good idea,” she said.

Pupils from several schools, including Boxgrove Primary School and Merrow Junior School, use the roads alongside cars during rush hour.

Surrey County Council has recently carried out consultations on similar speed limit schemes in Dorking, Woking and Walton-on-Thames. The council said lower speed limits would help reduce the number of crashes and serious injuries, while creating a safer environment for children and older residents.
