According to the BBC, Sheffield City Council has stated that "urgent health and safety issues" need to be addressed at the school. A full replacement of the school’s roof is planned for 2027, but in the meantime, the council will implement "emergency measures" to ensure the building remains safe. The Education Department has allocated £720,000 for repair work.

The report adds that a recent inspection confirmed the roof is in a seriously poor condition. Water entering the building is causing ceilings to deteriorate. "Although a commission has been approved for a full roof replacement, major work will not begin until 2027. The building continues to deteriorate, and the current condition poses immediate health and safety risks," the council said.

The council warned that if temporary repairs are not completed on time, water damage could worsen, potentially requiring parts of the school to close. This could "cause serious disruption to teaching" and may even necessitate relocating pupils to other schools.

Emergency interim repairs include installing external guards to catch loose or falling materials, removing damaged suspended ceilings in classrooms, and replacing them temporarily with fire-retardant coverings. A temporary scaffolding structure will be built to prevent further weather damage, allowing main roof work to be carried out safely over classrooms.

The report adds: "These measures will immediately protect the safety of pupils, staff, and visitors, prevent further deterioration of the building, and ensure the school remains operational."
