Schools to receive £5.5 million for repairs and maintenance

According to the BBC, Herefordshire's schools are in line for a major injection of capital funding, with the county council committing more than £5.5 million to repair and maintenance work across its estate.

The money has been split into two streams. Just under half will go toward essential building repairs at schools across the county, while the remainder has been earmarked specifically for improvements at Aylestone School in Hereford — one of the larger single investments in the package.

Aylestone's share of the funding will cover a full boiler replacement, renovation work at Broadlands House, and a complete re-roofing of the site's CDT block — a combination of projects that addresses both immediate safety needs and longer-term building resilience.

The council framed the investment as part of a broader strategy to keep its school buildings fit for purpose, arguing that well-maintained facilities are inseparable from the quality of education children receive. Councillor Ivan Powell said ensuring every child has access to a good learning environment remains the council's central objective.

"By protecting our school facilities we are sending a clear message to our children that their education matters," he said.

The programme also carries an environmental dimension. The council confirmed that the works include measures designed to improve sustainability performance across the affected sites, bringing them closer to the authority's long-term net zero commitments.
