The Technical University of Moldova (UTM) launched the most powerful academic high-performance computing (HPC) system in Moldova

Aligning itself with the highest standards of major international academic centers, UTM opens new frontiers for research, education, and innovation in Moldova

The Technical University of Moldova (UTM) launched the most powerful academic high-performance computing (HPC) system in Moldova

The Technical University of Moldova (UTM) has inaugurated the country’s most powerful high-performance computing (HPC) system, marking a historic milestone for Moldovan academia and research. This investment, valued at €720,000, was made possible through the Higher Education in Moldova Project, which is financed by the World Bank and implemented by the Ministry of Education and Research.

The computing system is a revolutionary digital infrastructure dedicated to scientific research, modern education and technological innovation, consisting of high-performance computing nodes dedicated to AI processing, as well as simulations and data analysis in quantities. Through this system, UTM expands its capacity for international collaboration and increases its attractiveness for large-scale research projects, while offering students, master's and doctoral students the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art technologies, at the standards of the world's great centers of excellence.

Equipped with multi-core processors, next-generation GPUs for artificial intelligence (AI) and 3D simulations, ultra-fast storage, and high-speed connectivity, the system allows multiple researchers and students to run large-scale simulations and analyses simultaneously. Thanks to this infrastructure, UTM researchers and students can now conduct projects that were previously impossible due to hardware limitations. For example, tasks in bioinformatics, AI training, medical image processing, and materials science that used to take days on a regular computer can now be completed in just a few hours. This leap in capability will significantly boost Moldova’s participation in international research collaborations.

Minister of Education and Research, Dan Perciun, emphasized the strategic importance of this development: “Everything related to artificial intelligence is of great perspective and interest. For us, as a country, it is crucial not to fall behind but to be part of the global technological revolution. Starting this October, Moldova will become part of the European HPC network, with the goal of joining the European AI Factories initiative.”

UTM Rector Viorel Bostan highlighted the university’s new opportunities: “A supercomputer of this scale is essential for modern universities that aim for excellence. This system gives us the power to conduct large-scale scientific projects, attract international funding, and provide students and researchers with world-class training conditions.”
