Applications are open for the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) CERC Migration and Bridging Divides Journalism Fellowship 2026, offering experienced journalists the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research on migration and integration. This one-month residency in Toronto, Canada, provides a platform for journalists to deepen their understanding of migration dynamics and enhance their reporting skills. The fellowship is scheduled to take place between March 1 and November 30, 2026 (excluding July and August), with a final application deadline of November 1, 2025.

Eligibility

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional media experience.
  • Proven track record in covering complex issues such as migration, politics, social issues, global affairs, or economics.
  • Open to both staff and freelance journalists.
  • Applicants must propose a primary and secondary academic host from the CERC Migration or Bridging Divides research teams at TMU.

Note: Anna Triandafyllidou is not eligible to be chosen as an academic host.

Program Dates/Location

  • Residency Period: 20 to 35 consecutive days between March 1 and November 30, 2026 (excluding July and August)

Required Documents

  • Condensed CV: Maximum four pages.
  • Cover Letter: Maximum two pages, including:
    • Your motivation for participating in the fellowship and how it will enhance your work as a journalist.
    • Explanation of how your work aligns with either:
      • CERC Migration Research Themes and existing projects, or
      • Bridging Divides Research Themes and existing projects.
    • Description of proposed activities during your residency, such as:
      • Conducting field research
      • Providing media training or workshops
      • Engaging with local organizations or stakeholders
    • Preferred academic host from the CERC Migration or Bridging Divides research teams at TMU:
      • Provide a first and second choice
      • Note: The host cannot be Anna Triandafyllidou
      • Host assignment will depend on availability and discretion of CERC Migration/Bridging Divides
    • Proposed residency dates (20–35 consecutive days between March 1 – November 30, 2026, excluding July and August).
  • Additional Documents:
    • 2–3 relevant work samples (written samples in PDF format; other digital content via links)
    • Optional: Recommendation letter from a supervisor or editor at a media outlet that has published or produced your work
