Türkiye Launches Turkish Language Program for International Students

Ankara, Türkiye – The Turkish Ministry of National Education (MEB) has introduced the Turkish Teaching Program for Foreigners (YTÖP) to help international students integrate socially and academically in Türkiye. The initiative builds on the PIKTES project, originally designed to support Syrian students, and aligns with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and Türkiye Century Maarif Model (TYMM).

YTÖP targets students aged 7–15 across primary, secondary, and high school levels, offering proficiency from pre-A1 to B1. It focuses on both cognitive and sociocultural learning, helping students navigate daily life, academic resources, and social and professional networks.

“Although major Turkish cities host many international companies, professional life is largely conducted in Turkish,” said Ali Can Çirak, regional business development manager at Leverage Edu. “Learning the language is essential for academic success and future employment.”

Interest in Turkish classes has surged among students from Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Somalia, Iraq, and Palestine, supported by programs like TÖMER, which provides officially recognized language certificates. The popularity of Turkish TV series and films also aids practical language learning.

Universities contribute through intensive courses, online learning, and work-integrated programs, enabling students to develop skills without compromising academics. Currently, Türkiye hosts over 340,000 international students, with plans to increase the number to 500,000 by 2028. Scholarships, English-taught programs, and strategic location make Türkiye an increasingly attractive global study destination.

“The combination of language programs, academic opportunities, and cultural initiatives is setting Türkiye apart for international students,” said Subitay Kaan Kaynak, regional manager at EDUKAS.
