The UNESCO Granada Literature Residency invites published writers and literary translators from anywhere in the world to spend one fully funded month (30 nights) in Granada, Spain, from November 3 to December 2, 2025. Hosted by Granada UNESCO City of Literature and the University of Granada, the programme supports literary creation while fostering cultural exchange and visibility for global authors.

Eligibility

  • Open to writers and literary translators residing in any country, writing in any language
    • Literary translators are professionals who translate creative works like novels, poetry, plays, and short stories from one language to another and write them in easy words
  • Requirement
    • at least two published books (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, etc.); self-published works are not eligible.
    • Upper-intermediate level of English or Spanish
    • A summary of the literary project to be developed during the residency.
  • Additional Materials (optional but appreciated)
    • Knowledge of Spanish
    • Cultural and historical interest in the city of Granada
    • An excerpt (1,500–3,000 words) from one of the applicant’s published works, translated into Spanish or English
    • Letter(s) of recommendation

Program Dates/Location

  • Application Deadline: August 31, 2025
  • Program Duration: November 3 to December 2, 2025 (30-night stay)
  • Results Announced: September 30, 2025, on the Granada City of Literature website.
  • Location: Granada, Spain — residence at the Corrala de Santiago, a guest residence managed by the University of Granada.

Program Benefits

The winners will receive:

  • Travel expenses to and from Granada covered
  • Full board accommodation in a private room at Corrala de Santiago
  • Full Time Meals
  • Opportunities to engage with Granada’s literary scene, including workshops, meetings with local writers, and participation in cultural activities

Engagement Expectations

  • Focus on your literary project during the residency. You may not engage in other public or external activities without prior approval
  • Participate in local events and literary life, as organized by the programme
  • Share and promote your residency experience publicly (e.g., on social media)
