The Stipendium Hungaricum is a full scholarship programme offered by the Hungarian government in cooperation with universities like the University of Debrecen. It is for international students (undergraduate, master’s, doctoral) to study in Hungary. The scholarship aims to support education cooperation, cultural exchange, and to attract talent to Hungarian higher education.

Eligibility

  • Open to international students from “sending partner” countries (countries that have cooperation agreement with Hungary).
  • Applicants for doctoral programmes must hold a master’s degree (or equivalent) before the deadline.
  • Fields of study and available programmes depend on your country (the “sending partner”)

Required Documents

(All documents usually need to be translated if not in English or Hungarian) 

  • Completed online application form via the Stipendium Hungaricum portal.
  • Motivation letter (min 1 page) saying why you want this scholarship and what you want to study.
  • School certificate (high school diploma for undergrad; bachelor/master degree certificate for higher levels). If you’re still in last year, a declaration about the missing documents can sometimes be used.
  • Academic transcripts / school reports.
  • Proof of language proficiency, or a declaration if you will provide it later.
  • Copy of passport (or national ID, followed by passport later).
    • For doctoral applicants only:
      • Research plan/proposal
      • Letter(s) of recommendation 
      • Supervisor’s statement (if required by the doctoral school)
  • Medical certificate (satisfactory health) 

Application Process

  • Go to the Stipendium Hungaricum online application portal.
  • Select your programme(s) (you can choose up to 2 programmes in eligible fields for your country).
  • Contact or check with your Sending Partner in your country (embassy, ministry etc.), as some also require submission via them or nomination process.
  • Upload all required documents online. If some required documents are missing, in limited cases you can submit a “Declaration about missing documents” (for certain documents only) and provide them by a specified later date.
  • For doctoral: also ensure supervisor statement if your doctoral school requires it.
  • After nomination by Sending Partner and document review, some universities will require entrance exams or interviews.
  • Medical certificate and final outstanding documents must be submitted by the deadlines (usually by August before studies begin).
