According to the BBC, a university student is among two people who have died following a meningitis outbreak in Kent, with health authorities contacting more than 30,000 students, staff and their families as they work to bring the situation under control.
Both victims are believed to have been aged between 18 and 21. The University of Kent confirmed that one of the two was a student at the institution. Eleven further cases remain in hospital in the Canterbury area, the majority of them also aged between 18 and 21, with several understood to be university students.
The UK Health Security Agency has been distributing antibiotics to students and staff living and working in specific blocks on campus as a precautionary measure. A letter seen by the BBC instructed those in certain areas to take the medication "without delay." The specific strain of the bacteria responsible has not yet been identified.
Investigators believe the outbreak may be linked to a social event in Canterbury, with some of those who fell ill understood to have attended. UKHSA specialists are interviewing those affected to trace close contacts and prevent further spread.
Trish Mannes, UKHSA's deputy regional director for the South East, warned that students faced a particular risk of missing early symptoms because meningitis can easily be mistaken for a common cold, flu or even a headache. She sought to reassure the wider university community that those identified as close contacts had already been given preventative antibiotics.
The University of Kent said student and staff safety remained its highest priority and that it was working closely with public health teams to ensure everyone received the advice and support they needed.
Meningitis Now chief executive Dr Tom Nutt urged vigilance, warning that the disease can advance rapidly and that university students are among the most vulnerable groups given the close-contact environments in which they live and study.
Canterbury MP Rosie Duffield described the deaths as "truly tragic."
Anyone experiencing symptoms of meningitis or septicaemia — including high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, sensitivity to light, a rash that does not fade under pressure, or sudden confusion — is advised to go immediately to the nearest emergency department or call 999.
