Are you planning to pursue a Master’s by Research or PhD in Australia? The University of New South Wales and the Australian Government are offering fully funded Higher Degree Research (HDR) scholarships that cover full tuition and provide a living allowance for qualified candidates. International students from any country interested in pursuing a Master’s or Doctoral degree are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility 

  • Applicants from any country are eligible to apply for the UNSW Graduate Scholarships in Australia.
  • A completed undergraduate degree and a valid degree certificate are required to be eligible.
  • You have to have a relevant background for admission eligibility for your chosen HDR program. To check the eligibility, visit Higher Degree Research and click on the link for your preferred program to view the eligibility criteria
  • All applicants must meet UNSW’s English language proficiency requirements and provide official proof. You can find the requirements here
  • Applicants cannot be considered for the UNSW HDR Scholarship if they are already receiving financial support for their studies from any source, including UNSW or the Australian Government.

  • Deadline of Application: If you wish to start your studies in Term 2 or 3 2026, you have to apply by 5 September 2025, midnight Australian time

Program Coverage

There are different types of HDR Scholarships at UNSW:

Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship: This scholarship covers full tuition fees + a stipend of $37,684 / year. The Australian Government funds tuition fees under this scholarship. The  coverage is awarded for 3.5 years for a PhD and 2 years for a Master’s Degree Program

University International Postgraduate Award (UIPA): Under this scholarship, again, the full tuition fee and a stipend of $37,684 / year. Tuition Fees are funded by UNSW (University of New South Wales)

Tuition Fee Scholarship (TFS) plus a Research Stipend: Within these scholarships, tuition fees are funded by the Faculty, School, or Supervisor

Application Process

  1. Find a Supervisor
  • Most Faculties at UNSW require you to secure a supervisor before applying.
  • Search for potential supervisors and research projects related to your field via UNSW’s supervisor directory or advertised projects.
  • Email the primary supervisor with your CV + your academic transcripts + your research plan

2. Pre-Admission Interview

  • If the supervisor is interested, you’ll have a pre-admission interview to discuss your proposed research project.

3. Prepare Your Research Plan

After securing a supervisor, prepare a Research Plan Form that includes:

  • How you meet the eligibility requirements for the HDR program.
  • Description of your research experience and capability.
  • Explanation of why you chose this project and supervisory team.
  • A structured description of your proposed research project.

4. Prepare Supporting Documents

Before applying, compile the following documents:

  • Academic Transcripts
  • Degree Certificates
  • CV
  • Research Plan Form
  • Proof of English Proficiency
  • Supervisor Agreement

5. Submit Your Application via Apply Online

  • Apply through the official UNSW Apply Online portal.
  • Upload all required documents.
  • In your application, select that you are applying for a scholarship.
