School bus in the traffic/ File: The Seattle Time
Most people instantly recognize a school bus by its bright yellow color. But interestingly, “school bus yellow” is not exactly the same as the yellow of a lemon. Instead, it is a slightly orange-toned shade, often described as yellow-orange similar to the color of a ripe mango. This specific tone was chosen intentionally, and over time it became the standard color for school transportation in the United States.
The story of this color goes back to the 1930s, when school transportation in the U.S. had no consistent design or safety standards. In 1939, educator Frank Cyr organized a conference to create national guidelines for school buses. One of the most important decisions made was choosing a highly visible color that would improve road safety. That decision led to the creation of “school bus yellow,” which is still used today in a refined form.
The main reason for this color is visibility and safety. Yellow is one of the easiest colors for the human eye to notice quickly. Research shows that yellow objects are detected in peripheral vision about 1.24 times better than red, meaning they are easier to spot even when we are not directly looking at them. This makes school buses more noticeable to drivers and pedestrians in traffic.
In addition, yellow performs well in low-visibility conditions such as fog, rain, or dim lighting. It stands out more clearly than many other colors, which reduces the risk of accidents. That is also why construction vehicles and road equipment are often painted yellow they need to be seen quickly to prevent danger.
Experts also suggest that yellow naturally attracts attention and is associated with alertness and caution. Combined with black lettering, it creates a strong visual contrast that makes school buses even easier to recognize from a distance.
In short, the iconic yellow school bus is not just a tradition. It is a carefully chosen safety feature designed to protect students and ensure they are seen on the road at all times.
